Susan Sontag, who would’ve celebrated her 80th birthday today, on love.

…love is kind… 1 Corinthians 13:4, NIV.
One translation of today’s simple verse says that “love looks for a way to be constructive.” In other words, love looks for ways to improve someone else’s life. Love brings out the best in other people. Don’t just get up in the morning thinking about yourself or how you can make your own life better. Think about how you can make someone else’s life better.
Ask yourself, “Who can I encourage today?” “Who can I build up?” You have something to offer those around you that no one else can give. Someone in your life needs your encouragement. Someone in your life needs to know that you believe in them. I believe God will hold us responsible for the people He’s put in our lives. He’s counting on us to bring out the best in our family and friends.

I wish someone had told me at 15: ‘You accept the love that you think you deserve’. I would have approached my relationships Completely different if they had. I like this idea of quality control: that we don’t have to accept just anyone into our lives. People talk about love as though it just happens to you - as though you’re a victim in it all, when actually you can make good choices and bad. - Emma Watson

The secret for long relationships is not having a perfect and harmonious love affair. It is not how often you fight, not because of the number of similarities and the stuff you both like doing together nor the number of mistakes you made. Those things count but it is the faith that keeps you going. A relationship would last if both of you are willing to not give up, if both of you are willing to stand up and still try every time one of you or both of you fall. You should not lose hope when you are struck with problems along the way. Give each other hope and hold on as long as you can.
